GED is a group of tests in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science that certify a person has high school level academic skills. It is not a super-hard test, but it does cover a lot of ground. It requires at least 6 months, and more likely a year of intense, committed study.

GED testing is available only at official testing centers and cannot be taken online. Beginning in 2014 the test will be administered primarily on computers.
For some, getting a GED may represent completion of unfinished business, while for others the GED is the prerequisite for going to college. Most colleges and universities accept the GED as equivalent to a high school diploma.
