Summer is an ideal time to study the SAT. As a one-on-one tutor I’ve discovered that during the school year it’s often difficult for parents and students to schedule the blocks of time needed for a complete SAT program. Too often, exams, athletic schedules, holidays, etc., can interfere with classes, homework, and practice exams. That is why I often suggest that such busy students consider instead a summer SAT program.
There are several reasons why a summer program can be beneficial for students. It is usually easier for lessons to be scheduled around summer jobs and family vacations. Depending upon the length of program chosen, a student can have one or occasionally two classes a week rather than be rushed as during the school year. Because lessons are absorbed over a longer period of time, techniques, strategies and vocabulary are retained longer into the fall. It is also easier to find large blocks of time for practice exams. This doesn’t mean that lessons should end once school starts. There should be a few more lessons, and one final practice exam and wrap-up lesson right before the SAT on the first Saturday in October. That is why a summer program frequently leads to increases in SAT scores, which is, after all, what it is all about.
